Outreach
Pensacola Little Theatre’s mission as a community theatre is to ensure that everyone in our community has an opportunity to enjoy live theatre. Our outreach programs take productions and workshops on the road, as well as bringing groups into the theatre to enjoy a play or musical on our stage.
Beyond Boundaries, founded in 2008, takes performances and workshops to community centers, assisted living facilities, schools and other locations in Northwest Florida. Our Beyond Boundaries team entertains and educates audiences young and old, from all walks of life.
Pensacola Little Theatre owns a truck, portable stage, lighting and sound equipment, and everything else needed to take productions on the road. PLT’s Beyond Boundaries outreach program is supported by a grant from Whitney Bank. During the 2011-2012 season, Beyond Boundaries will be working with schools to teach students about good nutrition through an interactive program called Cooking It! Beyond Boundaries’ adult actors prepare local students to perform alongside them in a play presented for the whole school.
Activity Demonstrating Accessibility
Cooking It! is an original musical play centering on the puppet characters Sprout, the Brussels Sprout, and Brock Broccoli, who don’t understand why children don’t like them. The program was developed to address the growing problem of childhood obesity by using a fun, interactive theatre to promote healthy eating. Trained adult actors spend a week working with a select group of 5th grade students at each school. In addition to the nutrition lessons presented in the show, the students learn songs and dances, develop puppeteering and acting skills, and gain understanding of everything that it takes to put on a show. On Friday, the actors and students perform together for the whole school. A school nutritionist supports lessons from the show by teaching students how to make healthy meals and snacks. Targeted implementation of Cooking It! includes elementary schools within Escambia County during the 2011-2012 school year. Initial performances at Boys and Girls Clubs of Escambia County and Molino Park Elementary School were very well received by instructors, student performers and the final audience.
